In this talk the Role of Professionals as reputation intermediaries in corporate and financial markets will be examined .As a Malaysian Philip TN Koh revisits the Bumiputra Finance Ltd ( BMF) saga which have HK drama in the collapse of Carrian group in the 1980s . The notion of promise and peril of Gatekeepers will be a thematic of the session. As lawyer cum academic having public listed corporate board experience in financial groups plus regulatory oversight in Central Bank of Malaysia together with Law Reform of Corporate and Commercial law the Speaker will share his insights of the legal ethical issues that is embedded in professional life . The Salient rules and norms of governance within Boardrooms and also Court with personal experiences will be shared . The Malaysian “Enrons “in 1MDB and latest the Royal Commission on the Pilgrim Fund Tabung Haji reverberates which lead to leading cases of corruption charges will also be touched upon.

About the Speaker

Mr. Philip TN Koh

Advocate & Solicitor, High Court of Malaya; Senior Partner of Messrs Mah-Kamariyah & Philip Koh and Adjunct Professor at Universiti Malaya and School of Business, Monash Malaysia University

Richard M. Kohn is a founding partner of the Chicago-based law firm Goldberg Kohn Ltd., where he represents banks and other financial institutions in cross-border and other lending transactions. He is also a Lecturer in Law in cross-border lending at The University of Chicago Law School. Richard served on the Expert Group for various UNCITRAL projects, including the UNCITRAL Legislative Guide on Secured Transactions (2007) (for which he was also a co-editor) and the UNCITRAL Model Law on Secured Transactions (2016), and is currently working on the UNIDROIT project on Best Practices for Effective Enforcement. From 2001 to 2020, Richard was Co-General Counsel of the Secured Finance Network (SFNet), which is the principal U.S. trade association for asset-based lenders. He is a Fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers, and received both his B.A. and J.D degrees from The University of Michigan.
