Gerard Sanders, General Counsel of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and Sir William Blair, Professor of Financial Law and Ethics at Queen Mary University of London and a member of the International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court, discuss how BRI is changing the world of commercial and financial dispute resolution, the perspective of Multilateral Development Banks, and other current developments. Gerard Sanders joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as General Counsel in August 2016. For the previous two years, he was General Counsel at the International Fund for Agricultural Development, a specialized agency of the United Nations, working at its headquarters in Rome. Previously, Gerard held various positions at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development working in its principal office in London, most recently as Deputy General Counsel. He is qualified to practice law in New Zealand, the State of Victoria, Australia, and England and Wales. He is a Chartered Accountant (NZ). Gerard is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, a member of the Law Society of England and Wales and a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. He is Visiting Professorial Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, Founding Editor of ‘Law in transition’ and General Editor of ‘AIIB Yearbook of International Law’.
Sir William Blair is a former High Court Judge of England and Wales, who was Judge in Charge of the London Commercial Court. He is a member of the Expert Working Group on commercial dispute resolution set up between the Chinese and United Kingdom judiciaries. He sits as a deputy Judge of the Court of First Instance, Hong Kong SAR, and is a Cheng Yu Tung Visiting Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong (HKU). He sits as an international arbitrator based in London Chambers at 3 Verulam Buildings. He is President of the Board of Appeal of the European Supervisory Authorities, a European Union body in the financial field, Chair of the Bank of England’s Enforcement Decision Making Committee (EDMC), and a Member of the Advisory Board of P.R.I.M.E. Finance (based in The Hague) and its Panel of Experts.
